for the next round? >> this wasn't just about performance. the obama folks think it's style and performs and and looking down instead of looking up. last night was about substance. looked at president obama and said you paid for obama-care by cutting $716 billion from medicare. you didn't have to do it. president obama had no answer. mitt romney said president obama you talk about a few tax breaks for the oil and gas industry. you have given much more tax breaks to the alternative energy energy and you have nothing to show for it. president obama just looked at him. at the end of the day barack obama couldn't engage on substance last night. the facts aren't going to get any better between thousand and the next two debates. the alternative energy market is not going to start working in the next two weeks. the obama economic policies aren't going to be working in the effect two weeks. it wasn't about style. it's about substance and obama not being able to stand on his own record. that record is not going to change between now and the next debate. martha: thank you for being with us today.

on all of these stories throughout the next three hours. president obama heading to las vegas tomorrow for a campaign rally. the president then expected to hunker down in henderson, nevada, to prepare for that first presidential debate. nbc news white house correspondent, mike viqueira, joining me live. now, mike, the president again, no public appearances today. earlier this week, he was at the united nations. he's been hitting the campaign trail hard. he's been dealing with the fallout from the libya attacks. is he finding enough time to even practice for the debates? >> well, you know, craig, to the extent that the command of the issues will make a difference in these debates, you can say he's getting a lot of on the job training, certainly. but to argue your premise a little bit, the president, as far as we know, is, in fact, practicing for those debates. just yesterday, he spent two hours south of the capital, about a mile from here, the democratic national committee headquarters, where we are told, on deep background, that he was, in fact, practicing on those debates. of course,

the last five weeks. if you elect obama for the next four years, there will be no better than the past four years. i happen to believe that is true, but not very inspiring. it is hard to blame the guy. he wants to get reelected with a pretty narrow cast approach to democratic and independent constituencies. i do not think we will get the kind of framing you would like. i am a little less pessimistic. i do think reality matters. and we will hit a cliff and all kinds of ways. the fed cannot keep printing money and expecting the world to take it or buy treasury notes to fund trillion dollar deficits forever. the economy is slow and going into another dip. i actually think the next president will have a moment between november 7, and i do not know, this summer or fall of 2013 to do a lot. i would bet there is a huge legislative agenda in 2013. i did not really by the gridlock argument. if obama gets reelected, evil have a mandate basically -- he will have a mandate basically the lesser version of bowel- simpson. if romney wins, he will have a mandate for some version of the right and budget, pr

in the next couple of days i'm going to be looking at the numbers in the other thing very quickly in terms of the minority vote. the other thing about barack obama's election in 2008 was the one something on the order of 43% of the white vote and in most of the national polls that is kind of where he is so that will be another number to look out for. the country is changing and in 2008, three-quarters of the electorate was white which was down from the mid-to high 80s 20 years ago and that number is going to change. and the question is in a very close election i don't think anyone thought it would get seven-point race. i think they thought it would be a two or three-point race. the metrics are there for him to win. speak to me, and i'm sorry to interrupt but to me i wanted to -- to meet the most stunning numbers from 2008, if you take out the 29-year-olds and look at the 30 plus mccain and obama tied and that shows you how important the youth vote is to the president by the way that is why you are seeing air force one showing up at airports near major university in three states on a regula
